There’s a fantastic piece of Freemasonry and Bailiwick history behind the latest fundraising challenge supporting Flying Christine III.
Paul Phillips, a member of Victor Carey Lodge and the Light Blues Club, was part of the original challenge in 1992, when a group embarked on the remarkable mission to sail a car to Sark to raise money for the Flying Christine III — which, at that time, had not yet been built.
The challenge was completed in just over two hours! ![]()
Now, some 34 years later, Paul and the team have decided to replicate that incredible challenge, this time with the added adventure of a trip to Herm.
On Sunday 9 August, a charity car pull took place, with Paul and Ben among those taking part. The car was pulled from Bulwer Avenue into St Peter Port before His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor, Sir Richard Cripwell, officially launched the specially modified car into the water.
The car has been carefully converted to float, with its engine removed and replaced by an outboard motor, while polystyrene and expanding foam help keep it buoyant. The wheels will be used for steering — making this one very unusual mode of transport!
The next stages of the challenge are:
Herm – 28 August
Sark – 5 September
The fundraising will help keep Flying Christine III maintained and operational so that it can continue its vital lifeline service to the Bailiwick — carrying paramedics to the other islands and transporting sick and injured patients to Guernsey for further care.
This challenge is also being undertaken in memory of John Vaudin, a friend and former crew member, making it an even more special undertaking.
From 1992 to 2026, and from a car on the road to a car on the sea — what an incredible story of community, friendship and fundraising.
Guernsey and Alderney Freemasons are proud to support and wish Paul, Ben and the whole team every success as they continue this fantastic challenge.
