A French Apron from the late 18th Century, the Apron is silk and hand painted it was identified by the Grand Lodge Museum in 1912 an “Engraved and hand coloured craft apron, French c1810”
This beautifully decorated apron has a light blue ribbon around the outer edge and flap, and has various Masonic symbols in the corners are the Sun and the Moon, below the point of the flap are sprigs of Acacia tied with the Mystic Tie symbolising the bond which unites men, below that are nine stars symbolising Wisdom/Strength/Beauty/Faith/Hope/Charity/God/You and your neighbour.
On the left-hand side is Pyramid a link to where ancient Freemasonry is believed to have started, in the centre is the Temple on the Square pavement representing dark and light the joys and sorrows of our chequered existence, and seven steps representing the then known seven planets and the seven liberal arts and sciences. At the top is a globe pointing out masonry universal and a broken column symbolising the death of the builder.
The Apron was donated to the Museum in April 1951 by Bro J Funnell, who joined Loyalty Lodge No.243 on the 21st March 1951 from John Lyon Lodge No.4987 of London.
