Sir Edmund Nagle Past Masters Jewel

This impressive Past Master’s Jewel in solid silver and decorated with red, orange and white stones or “brilliants”, was recovered after the occupation after being among items looted from the Masonic Temple at Le Marchant Street and sent to Berlin for an anti-mason exhibition.

On the reverse of the Jewel it is stamped “No.520”, this relates to Lodge of Friendship No.520 meeting at Gibraltar. It is possible that this jewel once belonged to Sir Edmund Nagle, who was a Rear Admiral and in 1807 was commander-in-chief in the Channel Islands and in 1814 Nagle became aide-de-camp to the Prince Regent who was at the time Grand Master.

On the 16th July 1807 in company with Sir John Doyle they joined Lodge No.336 Lodge of Fellowship in Guernsey and later these two men were founders of Doyle’s Lodge of Fellowship No.90 on the 14th September 1807. Existing material suggests that on the 19th August 1813 at the ceremony dedicating the Catholic Church in Port Louis, Mauritius, Nagle was present and proposed a toast as Master of Lodge Fellowship Guernsey to the Grand Master HRH the Prince of Wales. It is understood that in 1814 he was also Master of Lodge Friendship and that corresponds with the hall marks on the reverse of the Jewel.
