Bro Robert Burns was born on January 25th 1759 and Died July 21st 1796 Bro Burns was born in Alloway, Scotland. Bro Robert Burns was initiated an Entered Apprentice in Lodge St. David, Tarbolton on 4 July 1781, at the age of 23. Bro Burns is world renowned for his poetry and is known as the Poet Laureate of Lodge Cannongate Kilwinning No.2. Bro Burns was also a member of Saint James’ Lodge No. 178 (now 135) and served as the Depute Master in 1784. Bro Burns was an active member of the Grand Lodge of Freemasons in Scotland. One of his more well-known works, “Auld Lang Syne,” is said to be about the spirit of camaraderie and brotherhood that the secret society is founded on. You hear it on New Year’s Eve and think of your friends, but according to this theory, Burns was thinking of his clandestine fraternity of brothers. Bro Robert Burns passed to the Grand Lodge Above on July 21st 1796 at the age of 37, and is buried at St Michaels Church Dumfries.
