A Past Masters Jewel belonging to Doyle’s Lodge of Fellowship No.84, it is one of the only Past Masters Jewels we have from Doyle’s Lodge in the Museum as the Lodge generally do not issue them.
The Jewel dating from 1909 was presented to W Bro Shelton G Agar, he was Initiated on the 12th February 1902 at the age of 28, Passed on the 12th March 1902 and Raised on the 9th April 1902 all in Doyle’s Lodge of Fellowship No.84, and was Worshipful Master of the Lodge during 1909, he held several Provincial Grand Ranks including Provincial Grand Registrar 1911- 1913, and Provincial Grand Senior Warden 1917.
The Jewel is in excellent condition with the enamel remaining bright and vibrant at the top is a banner with the Lodge name and attached to the ribbon is the Doyle’s Crest and above that the year W Bro Agar was Master of the Lodge 1909 and suspended from the bottom is the Jewel that is engraved on the back “Presented to W Bro. S G Agar by the Members of Doyle’s Lodge No.84”.
It is usually tradition although Doyle’s Lodge doesn’t always do this to present the outgoing Master with a “Past Masters Jewel” as a token of appreciation for his dedication and service by the Brethren of the Lodge, as with most things in Freemasonry these Jewels have symbolic meaning, the jewel represents the 47th Problem of Euclid and is meant to represent the progress made in Freemasonry by the recipient having served as Master.
Euclid was a mathematician who lived and taught in Alexandria between 260-320 b.c and is recognized as the father of geometry, in Speculative Freemasonry the 47th Problem of Euclid stands for the importance to “square the square”.
